RYJI MASUDA
桝田雷治
ライジ・マスダ（桝田雷治）は、カリフォルニアを拠点に世界のサーフ、スケートシティを訪れる14歳の若者。PANCAKE SKATE MAG 初号のRVCA SKATEの広告で、tweak air を披露していた少年だ。妹とベルギー人の母、そして日本人の父を持っており、父の故郷・鎌倉への帰省で、頻繁に来日しているとのこと。クリスチャン・ホソイ（80年代にプロスケーターとして活躍し現在HOSOI SKATEBOARDSを運営）からサポートを受け、アルト・サーリ（元プロスケーター、現在は世界的に活躍するフォトグラファー）の被写体としても旅を続けている。今回は、本誌広告になった写真を始め、同じセッションで撮れたアザーカットも振り返りながら、彼の近況を訊いてみた。
Ryji Masuda is 14 years young skateboarder and surfer based in California who surfs and skates cities around the world with his younger sister, Belgian mother and Japanese father. It seems that he often visits Japan to surf and skate in his father’s hometown Kamakura. He is supported by CHRISTIAN HOSOI (former professional skateboarder, currently running HOSOI SKATES), and travel around the world with ARTO SAARI (former professional skateboarder, now a prominent photographer), capturing surf and skate photos and videos. These works will be published from 27th to 29th of April in Sendagaya, Tokyo.

Q. ハロー、ライジ! 9月から高校に進むわけだけど、準備は順調ですか？
Hey Ryji! You’re starting high school in September, right? How’s the preparation going? Are you busy?
A. 最近サンタモニカの希望校に合格したので、安心して本当に嬉しいです。ノーモア・ストレスです笑。
I recently got accepted into the school of my choice in Santa Monica so I’m relieved and really happy about it. No more stress ha ha ha.
Q. LAコートハウスの近くの高校みたいだね。コートハウスでやっておきたいことはある？
Seems like you’re going to a high school near the LA Courthouse. Anything you want to do at there?
A. そうだね、ストーナーとLAコートハウスの両方に近いから、もっとストリートスケートに没頭できるのが楽しみですね。レッジのテクをもっと磨いて、フリップインとかもできるようになりたいです。
Yeah it’s close to both Stoner and Courthouse so I can’t wait to dive into more street skating. I’m set on getting more tech on ledges and being able to flip up to the platform.
Q. ライジがスケートを始めたのは何歳のときですか？
At what age did you start skating?
A.覚えている限りでは、多分4歳くらいです。
As long as I can remember, maybe 4
Q. デッキのサイズは何インチ？
What size is your deck?
A. 8.25 inch です。
Q. スケートとサーフィン、それぞれを始めたきっかけは何だったの？
What prompted you to start skateboarding and surfing respectively?
A.僕はずっとそのシーンに身を置いていたので、スケートとサーフィンを始めるのは自然な流れでした。
I’ve always been around that scene. So it was natural for me to start.
Q. スケートとサーフィンについて、マインド面ではどんな違いがあると思う？
In terms of mindset, what differences do you think exist between skateboarding and surfing?
A. 波はウェーブプール以外は常に同じではないから、より即興的でいなければならない。一方、スケートでは同じ場所を何度も滑ることができる。
The wave is never the same except for the wavepools so you have to be more spontaneous but in skating you could skate the same thing over and over.
Q. CHRISTIAN HOSOI との出会いはいつ頃、どのように出会ったの？
When did you first meet CHRISTIAN HOSOI and how did you meet him?
A. 小さい頃にビッグ・サーで行われたスコット・オスターの結婚式に出たとき、初めてクリスチャンに会いました。でも3年前までスポンサードされてませんでしたよ。
At a wedding of Scott Oster’s in Big Sur when I was very little but I didn’t get sponsored until 3 years ago.
Q. クリスチャンがライジにくれた一番のアドバイスは何ですか？
What’s the best words CHRISTIAN adviced you?
A. 『トリックがどれだけ難しくても、スタイルがなければ意味がない』
”It doesn’t matter how hard the trick is, unless it’s done with style”.
Q. 今まで、日本に何回くらい来たことがある？
How many times have you visited Japan so far?
A. 毎年少なくとも1回は行きますね。時にはもっと行く年もあります。
I go at least once a year some years more.
Q. ARTO SAARIとの出会いはいつ頃？ 彼を一言で表すと、どんな印象ですか？
When did you first meet ARTO SAARI? How would you describe him in one word?
A. 彼とはノースショアでサーフィン中に出会い、2年前に撮影を始めました。
『熟練』という言葉がアルトを表すのにぴったりです。なぜなら、彼は自身の実践によって全てを理解してきたからです。
I met him while surfing on North Shore and we begun shooting 2 years ago.
“SKILLED” would be the one word to describe him, because he figured out everything on his own by doing
Q. ARTO がくれた一番のアドバイスは？
What the best words ARTO advised you?
A. 『仕事を終わらせること』。これぞ! って一枚が撮れるまで僕らは止めません。
“Get the job done” we don’t stop until we get the shot

A. 料理、キックボクシング、ベースを弾くことです。

A. 4月27日から29日まで、東京・千駄ヶ谷でアルト・サーリとのショー『RYJI』があります。
